BUCKRAM

Buckram is a rigid cotton material with a basic, typically open, weave, made in various thicknesses. In book binding, buckram offers several appealing characteristics.

Besides being highly sturdy, it prevents the bookbinder’s adhesive from penetrating and causing discoloration or marks on the book’s front and back covers; the fabric’s appearance resembles mesh.

Once treated with a sizing agent, it becomes significantly stiffer, more enduring, and tougher.

BUCKRAM 525 fabric is acrylic coated high-quality cotton fabric.
It is a high-performance covering fabric material designed for various applications requiring durability, strength, and protective properties.

It has the following properties:

  • Tensile Strength: Approximate 480 N as per ISO 13934-1 method.
  • Tear Strength: Approximate 13.75 N as per ISO 13937-1 method.
  • Bursting Strength: 312 kPa as per ISO 13938-2 method.
  • Abrasion Resistance: grade – 3, colour changes after 5000 rubs (Martindale method) as per ISO 12947-2, 4 method, breakdown point – not applicable due to nature of fabric.
  • Colorfastness to light: grade – 4/5 as per ISO 105 B02:2014.
  • Colorfastness to water: grade – 4/5 to 5/5 as per ISO 105 E01.
  • Gloss value: Ranging 4-5.5 as per gloss meter at 60°.
